OatMEAL that’s actually good

Working full time, keeping the house clean, paying bills, trying to stay fit and healthy…this can all be difficult to time manage. However the one thing that we can’t go without paying attention to is that you must eat! Therefore, finding quick and easy recipes that you don’t have to make everyday is key. 

Welcome: the breakfast oatmeal casserole! Healthy, quick, and satisfying. Here is the recipe below, which can be modified in many ways (see my modifications below). I used all organic ingredients and swapped out the dairy where I could. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give this an 8! Very easy, inexpensive, filling, and tasty!

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups All Natural Oats
  • ⅓ Cup Brown Sugar 
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • ½ Cup Chocolate Chips (dark chocolate)
  • 1 Cup Strawberries (raspberries)
  • ⅔ Cup Blueberries
  • 1 Ripe Banana
  • 2 Cups Milk (vanilla almond milk)
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 2 Tbsp Butter (organic melt buttery spread)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 1/2 tsp Chia seeds
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Spray a 10×10 casserole dish generously with cooking spray.
  3. In a large bowl, mix oats, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, half the chocolate chips, & half the berries. Stir well and pour into casserole dish. Add the other half of the berries & chocolate chips to the top of the mixture. Then, slice the banana & add to top. Sprinkle on chia seeds. 
  4. In a separate bowl, combine milk, egg, butter, & vanilla. Whisk thoroughly. Pour on top of oatmeal mixture, making sure the all oats are soaked evenly. 
  5. Bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove casserole & add a tablespoon of brown sugar to the top of the casserole for added sweetness (optional.) Bake for an additional 5 or 10 minutes or until the top of the casserole is golden brown.

Some modification ideas:

  • Try adding chia or flax seeds to the mix
  • Lessen the sugar and butter
  • Swap one cup oats for one cup freekeh
  • Try different berries, like raspberries

This movie is incredible and it’s free on Netflix! I wrote a bit about my thoughts on the food industry (check it out below) but as an intro here is a snapshot of what you will learn about by a few quotes:

I sometimes think about whether the government is behind all of this obesity and sickness. First I think, no they couldn’t be. Then I look and the evidence and I go, well that’s what’s happening so why would they do that? What is the motive to poison us and keep us sick? Why would they want the environment to be destroyed by poisonous products? Why do they bio-engineer foods and animals against what has worked for thousands of years in nature without our manipulation? And then it hit me: it’s not necessarily just the government, but the food industry. Food companies are behind all of this because they get in with policy makers and lobbyists from the beginning of heir careers, creating a bonded partnership! Despite any evidence or science that their product is harmful, these politicians can’t deviate from their original agreements or they risk losing their position of influence. I as a consumer am also bound to this system, I am realizing. What a scary fact..I eat food everyday, we NEED food everyday, we are dependent on food! We are becoming so dependent on the food industry when their sole mission is to generate more profits. They aren’t functioning to benefit our health, our planet, or anything but their profits. But then I think, wouldn’t they want to preserve us and the environment that grows their foods for long term sales and profits? Well, why would they be concerned about what happens decades, even centuries from now when they can be the CEO or the Director or Marketing that boosted profits by 300% from 2010-2015 by getting us Americans addicted to their products to keep coming back for more and more and in turn make a ton of money for themselves. To close with another quote: “don’t you have any shame at all? You have to know that what you’re selling is bad. How do you live with yourselves?”

What is Xanthan Gum & why is it in almost every processed food I see?

Being conscious of what you put into your body requires reading labels and ingredients in all products. I’ve always read the “Xanthan gum” part of ingredients and been like, “hmm..this is in so many foods that it must be safe.” I never read too much into it, but after learning that msg has 50 different names, gmo corn can be found in many things as high fructose corn syrup, etc. I decided to do a quick search. Here’s what I found:

So what’s it for? Xanthan gum is a thickening and stabilizing agent used in foods, cosmetics, toothpaste and medicines to name a few. It can also lower blood sugar & cholesterol and stimulates the digestive tract (source). If you are gluten free, use store bought salad dressing, or use anything that needs to remain thickened or mixed, chances are you are consuming this on a regular basis. 

In scientific terms: xanthan gum is a polysaccharide secreted by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris (source). I get that we need to thicken foods or keep them mixed nicely, but seriously who was the first person to recognize that a certain kind of bacteria’s waste that produces rot on vegetables could be a useful sugar we could add in almost any food? So strange to me haha. 

Xanthan gym is derived from corn, wheat or soy and is usually only less than .5% of the product weight. According to FDA regulations, Organic products need only be 95% organic to carry the “USDA organic” seal. This makes me think then that our organic processed foods could still have some gmo ingredients from these little emulsifiers perhaps? I don’t know just something to consider as I thought “organic” meant 100% organic. 

So should you avoid it? If you are allergic to corn, wheat or soy then yes. I haven’t found any scientific studies that prove it to be harmful. However with most things we manipulate in a lab, add to foods and consume on a large scale, I would be careful. I have decided not to worry about it since it is in such small quantities. You gotta pick your battles, right?

How To: Parasite Cleanse – Materials, Links, and Tips!

Parasite Cleansing Materials

For this cleanse, you’ll need Now Fresh Green Black Walnut Wormwood Complex, Whole Psyllium Husk, Liquid Bentonite Clay, and probiotics all of which are on Amazon. Links here:

Now Foods Fresh Green Black Walnut Wormwood Complex, 2-Ounce

Yerba Prima Psyllium Whole Husks, 12-Ounce

Yerba Prima Bentonite, Detox Pint, 16 Ounce

Garden of Life RAW Probiotics Women, 90 Capsules

*If you are planning on doing the cleanse for two weeks and doing the maintenance cleanse a week later (recommended) I suggest purchasing a larger amount of Bentonite clay and the tincture as I ran out.

How to cleanse: 
  1. Morning: As soon as you wake up drink a P&B colon cleanse shake: mix 8 oz of water or juice, add 1 tablespoon of your psyllium husks & 1 tablespoon liquid bentonite clay. Shake, don’t stir with metal utensils as the Bentonite clay will pull the metal into your drink, and consume quickly. Follow with an 8 oz glass of water immediately. Wait 1 hour after drinking the P&B shake, then take the parasite cleanse tincture by mixing two dropper full (not drops, entire droppers full) into 8 oz of water. Once this settles for at least 30 minutes, you can eat. Important: follow the time guidelines listed above, as the bentonite clay will absorb any nutrients from foods you eat and herbs in the tincture.
  2. Night: About two hours before dinner, make & drink your P&B shake and follow with 8 oz. glass of water. After an hour, make your tincture mix and drink. 30 minutes later you can eat. Take a probiotic 1 hour after you eat dinner.
  3. Repeat these steps daily for two full weeks!
  4. SUPER IMPORTANT UPDATE: Be sure to take a probiotic nightly!! Since you are killing a large amount of bacteria, you need to replenish the good ones to keep yourself from getting sick! I ignored this step and got so sick this week, I couldn’t even celebrate my 25th birthday! I went to my favorite local, organic health foods store Down To Earth and talked with the associates who recommended the RAW probiotics Women by Garden of Life, which I LOVE!

Overall tips for a great cleanse: Follow the timelines, take your probiotics, eat healthy/alkaline/parasite-killing foods, take healing herbs and drink healing organic tea (see my Wall of Wellness and posts on my instagram @liveinloveorganics for a couple teas I drink), do your own research and find what works for you! You are dramatically changing your body-thank it by helping it stay healthy!

»Parasite Killing Foods« 

Eat these while cleansing and even when not cleansing to help rid your self of parasites: raw garlic, pumpkin seeds, dried figs, pineapples, oregano essential oil, onion, extra virgin coconut oil, papaya seeds, pomegranate, and almonds

Tips from Organic Olivia:

You can do this parasite and colon cleanse that I’m doing while eating a normal diet. BUT, eat clean and healthy. Do not eat heavy foods or processed foods. It’s best to do the parasite and colon cleanse while juice fasting.

How To Enhance This Parasite/Colon Cleanse
1. EAT HEALTHY Veggies, salads, leafy greens and cleansing foods. Avoid high sugar foods, and avoid all refined sugar/wheat/processed food.
2. EAT PARASITE KILLING FOOD – Raw garlic, pumpkin seeds aka “pepitas”, pineapples, papaya seeds, oregano essential oil in tea, dried figs.
3. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER – Keep your system flushing out toxins.

After Your Parasite Cleanse 
Continue to take a maintenance dose of the tincture or pills. This would be two to three droppers full, twice a day on an empty stomach, once or twice a week.

Also important: after you finish the parasite and colon cleanse, take an excellent probiotic daily. You want to replenish any good bacteria that may have been effected by the herbal antimicrobial.

Week Two of the Parasite Cleanse!

It is now the completion of week 2 on the Parasite Cleanse and man oh man do I have some updates for you!! Great things below, I suggest you check out each result so you know how my experience was and what to expect in yours! I decided not to bore you with my daily feelings/experiences (check out Post 1 if you want the intro), rather I’d share with you the exciting overall results!

How I ate and how this affected the cleanse: I started out eating like normal, just had fruit/oats for breakfast, salads for lunch and whatever I wanted for dinner (keep in mind, I am also a vegetarian so no meat on the cleanse). With the colon cleanse and all the fiber I was getting from my veggies, my bowel movements were happening 3+ times/day. I felt like I was really cleansing my body. Then by day 5 I had to go to a friend’s going away dinner, so I binged on pizza and pasta. This led me to make more poor choices in the following days full of bagels, more pizza, and refined sugars in the form of cake, ice cream and mochi and I tell ya, I really felt a difference. My bowel movements slowed to maybe once/day, they even almost halted, and the amount that was coming out was minuscule compared to the first handful of days because of the processed foods I was eating. I am a pizza person and I couldn’t resist a night out to celebrate with friends, but I regretted these decisions because I knew I was supposed to avoid sugars and processed foods. I felt like I wasn’t getting enough out of my cleanse, which led to…

Juicing!: I started juicing for the past 4 days and I am really feeling the benefits and changes!! My face is glowing, my skin is clearing, my tummy is flattening, and my energy levels are through the roof!! I feel like I can think clearer and enjoy my days more! My bowel movements have returned to multiple times a day in large amounts so I am so happy I’m finishing the cleanse strong. I highly recommend implementing cold-pressed, organic green juices into your daily meals while on this cleanse. I will include my recipes in another post (stay tuned). For now, check out this link for ideas. This is from “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” which inspired me to juice cleanse and it is amazing. Check it out on Netflix!

Skin: I have been told by multiple people that my face is glowing! I am so shocked because I honestly feel like it is too! My skin looks more moisturized, I have more color in my lips, and more pigment in my skin tone. I also have noticed my skin is clearing up – finally something that is working! Two places in particular, I have repeat offenders where even when I pop these pimples, without fail they return. I kid you not, these pimples are gone right now! I hope this isn’t one of those phases where I think it’s clearing but it pops back up, so I’ll keep you guys informed about that situation!

Energy: Levels are through the roof! Not many of you know this, but I work in an office Monday – Friday 7:30am – 4:30pm HST as a Recruiting Specialist/Account Manager. This job is so stressful, mundane at times, and really not anything I’m passionate about, so stress levels spike! Pre-cleanse, I was often/easily pissed off, snappy, annoyed, and exhausted despite my daily coffee routine. Post-cleanse I am still a little sluggish to get up in the morning (not so much a morning person myself) but once my eyes have finally settled into the open stage, I am wide awake, happy, and hilarious if I do say so myself – I have been cracking some funny jokes around work and everyone is noticing it, haha! This energy boost is making it hard to sit at a desk all day and work, BUT I am grateful for the change in mood, as work has been a complete stressful drag lately.

Parasite sightings: You guys, I apologize…I TRIED to dig and find worms to analyze and potentially take pictures of so I could share them with you, but I just don’t have the stomach for it! I would get queasy at the first attempt and just couldn’t stomach it. However, I still have seen the thin, stringy white worms on the outsides and the fact that I can see them on the outside makes me think there are TONS! I’ve lost count of how many, and I can only imagine how many are actually in there if I could really analyze, but

I am blown away at the results and how many parasites have come out.

If I’ve seen this many without digging, I can’t even imagine what’s really in there and all the different kinds (gross!) Don’t worry, they aren’t alive and you don’t feel them at all. If you are worried about this, feel free to ask me and I can go into more detail!
